How what we know changes what we remember: a neuroimaging and computational investigation of associative memory.
Memory is one of our core cognitive abilities which enables us to retain personally experiences events (episodic memory) as well as general world knowledge (semantic memory) over an extended period of time. Dual process theories propose that retrieval of episodic memories is contingent upon two independent processes: familiarity (providing a sense of oldness) and recollection (the recovery of events and context). Neuroimaging studies have reported distinct neural signatures for familiarity and recollection, lending further support to dual-process theory. Although it is clear that episodic and semantic memory should interact during normal cognition, we know very little about the dynamics of this interaction and how it influences familiarity and recollection-based retrieval. In my talk I will present several lines of empirical evidence, derived from behavioural estimates and neuroimaging data acquired via EEG and fMRI, which demonstrate that familiarity is particularly susceptible to prior semantic information and leads to significantly enhanced associative recognition for semantically coherent material. The second part of my talk will focus on whether empirically obtained modulation in familiarity and recollection reflect activation of distinct memory traces or different retrieval mechanisms operating on a single memory trace. I will introduce a computational model that uses a single neuronal network to store memory traces, with two distinct and independent retrieval processes accessing the memory store. By demonstrating that this dual-process single-trace model can account for a range of empirical findings, I will highlight the importance of distinguishing between neuronal processes and the neuronal representations upon which they operate.
