Resumen: Scientific datasets are becoming increasingly large and complex. For the domain of visualization this requires techniques to depict data such that people can easily perceive and understand it. For this purpose I discuss how visualization can take inspiration from artistic depiction and traditional illustration. Specifically, I show how illustrative visualization techniques can support the understanding of the structure of the brain through fiber tracts and their anatomical context.
Visualizations, however, cannot always show all important aspects of data in one static image. Instead, people need to be able to interactively explore and manipulate them. For this purpose I present approaches that employ large, touch-sensitive display surfaces to allow people to get instant control of the data and to explore it in a very direct manner. I discuss challenges of both 2D and 3D data interaction on touch-sensitive surfaces and show several examples from my past work. I close my talk by mentioning a number of current projects and future research challenges for interactive scientific visualization.Biografía: Tobias Isenberg is an Assistant Professor in Computer Graphics and Interactive Systems at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. He also currently holds a Digiteo Chair of Excellence for the topic «Advanced Visual Exploration with Interactive Illustrative Rendering» in collaboration with the French national research institutes CNRS and INRIA at Saclay (south of Paris, France). He works on topics in artistic rendering, illustrative visualization, human-computer interaction, and computer graphics. He is interested, in particular, in new scientific visualization applications for large, interactive displays.
