Resumen: Cognitive systems have been advancing on both theory and practice in the last decade to an exciting levels helped by the development of networks, web standards, software engineering and artificial intelligence. Two particular developments helped moving cognitive systems forward: agent-oriented systems and web standards in support of knowledge engineering. This talk will be looking at the requirements of cognitive systems engineering. We start by looking at the various components of a cognitive system, e.g. memory, affects, thinking-inference, learning and so on. Some elements such as emotion and personality modeling will receive a greater focus related to some current research projects, e.g. crowd simulation and urban planning. We move from these components to the architectures that bring them together in a software agent or a hardware robot. During this tour we will highlight the challenges faced of the different stages of developing and deploying a cognitive system. The talk will also aim to highlight advances in the research community such as UK Grand Challenges (e.g. Grand Challenge 5 on Cognitive Architectures) and EU Humaine Network. We will look also briefly at some of the applications that are receiving interest such as intelligent homes, care services, and creative industries.
