Conferencia impartida por Ewan O’Connor, PhD, Senior researcher at the Finnish meteorological Institue, Helsinki.
Resumen: Doppler lidars are capable of providing winds and turbulent parameters, such as dissipation rate, at high spatial and temporal resolution. This has exciting implications for boundary-layer retrievals permitting the diagnosis of various aspects of the dynamical boundary layer, such as boundary layer type and height, multiple internal layers or regions of mixing and their specific properties. It is also possible to identify the source of mixing, whether it is surface or cloud-top driven, a product of wind shear or changes in surface roughness.
We have developed a classification method that that identifies turbulent regions in the boundary-layer and objectively assigns a source for the turbulent mixing, using a combination of several lidar quantities (attenuated backscatter coefficient, vertical velocity skewness, dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy, vector wind shear, horizontal winds). This method also discriminates between mixing driven by the surface, shear, and cloud-driven. Locations in different climatic regimes show clear differences in the diurnal and seasonal variation of the boundary-layer, especially between marine and continental locations.
This talk will provide an overview of the current activities in wind and turbulent retrievals, discuss briefly how these methods may be utilised, and present some new applications being developed such as measurements of wind gusts, low-level jets, and identifying ash/dust resuspension.
