The modeling of cracks and performing crack growth simulations remains a challenging problem in the mechanics of continua. Over the past decade, the mesh-independent modeling of cracks via the framework of partition-of-unity (extended finite element method, X-FEM) has come to the forefront with a wide array of applications in different areas of failure mechanics. In the X-FEM, the standard displacement-based finite element approximation is enriched by adding additional discontinuous and near-tip crack functions through the framework of partition-of-unity. This enables
cracks to be modeled independent of the mesh and no remeshing is required in crack growth simulations. In this talk, I will first present a brief introduction to the theoretical basis of the X-FEM and its applications to extract SIFs for cracks. This will be followed by two recent developments within my group: efficient numerical integration rules to integrate discontinuous and weakly singular integrands that arise in the weak form integrals and a new enrichment strategy for describing cracks—coined as harmonic enrichment functions. Numerical examples and supportive results
will be presented to demonstrate the benefits of the new integration rules and the use of harmonic enrichment functions for multiple and intersecting cracks within the extended finite element method.
BIO: Sukumar holds a B.Tech. from IIT Bombay in 1989, a M.S. from Oregon Graduate Institute in 1992, and a Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University in 1998. He joined UC Davis in 2000, where he is now an associate professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Sukumar’s current research focuses on maximum-entropy meshfree methods, modeling discontinuities in enriched finite element methods, and development of a new real-space finite element method to solve the Kohn-Sham equations of density functional theory
