Abstract:
New experimental approaches for the preparation of translationally cold neutral molecules in the gas phase will be presented. In particular, I will focus on recent advances in three such techniques: In the first one, translationally cold polar neutral molecules are obtained by filtering them from a thermal sample using electrostatic fields. In the second one, we generate moving three-dimensional traps for polar neutral molecules. The speed of these traps can be modified while the molecules are trapped, and they can thus be used to capture molecules at high velocity and slow them down to any desired speed. The third technique uses an indirect approach: the desired molecule is prepared as a negative ion. This ion is then decelerated and neutralized by laser-photodetachment. This indirect approach is thus expected to be much more general than most currently existing techniques.
