Seminario del máster en Geofísica y Meteorología, impartido por el Profesor Rolf Mjelde – Departamento de Ciencias de la Tierra, Universidad de Bergen (Noruega).
Rolf Mjelde es Profesor en el Departamento de Ciencias de la Tierra de la Universidad de Bergen (Noruega). Hace cabeza en el grupo de geofísica marina y su investigación se centra en el Mar de Barents, Jan Mayen y el margen divergente del Atlántico Norte. Es responsable de la adquisición de datos geofísicos (sobre todo datos sísmicos con OBSs) y de su modelado. Su objetivo es entender la evolución del Atlántico Norte y la interacción entre la tectónica de placas y el punto caliente de Islandia.
Abstract: The first part of the talk focuses on the evolution of the North Atlantic, from the collapse of the Caledonian mountain range, through continental extension and break-up influenced by the Icelandic hot-spot, to ultra-slow oceanic accretion. The various stages are documented by multichannel seismic-, wide-angle seismic- and potential field data, from the Norwegian mainland to Greenland. The second part of the talk presents GoNorth (Geosciences in the Northern Arctic), a new initiative for exploring the Arctic Ocean north of Spitsbergen. GoNorth is embraced by 13 institutions in Norway, cooperating mainly with institutes in Germany, Denmark and Sweden. The first survey will be conducted in Oct-Nov. 2022 using the Norwegian ice-breaker Kronprins Haakon. The main scientific objects for GoNorth are to understand the process that rifted the continental Lomonosov ridge from the northern Spitsbergen margin, the processes forming the ultra-slow spreading Gakkel Ridge, and the area’s climate history through Cenozoic.
