El Instituto de la Paz y los Conflictos de la Universidad de Granada (IPAZ), junto al Berggruen Institute organizan el Seminario «A philosophy for Europe’s re-foundational epoch», que tendrá lugar del 3 al 5 de octubre en Granada, en el que se reflexiona sobre los precedentes históricos y las herramientos para reformular el nuevo papel de Europa en un contexto internacional especialmente convulso.
Presentación:
If the European Union can be understood fundamentally as a project that came along with the failure of Europe’s empires, can its world-historical role in the future be understood along a different paradigm, as a civilization of consent, rather than an empire of force? What would be the manners and behaviors of Europe in its singularity which could give it such a renewed universal role? Can Europe act, for example, as a terrain of translation between competing civilizational claims and thereby transform global clashes into mutual recognition and multilateral dialogue, or even
co-creation?
If the Ukraine war has put enlargement back on the European agenda in an urgent way, Europe has yet to develop an overarching narrative around the meaning of an enlarged Union. While the technical questions around decision making structures inside an enlarged Union are enormous, they risk crowding out the underlying essential question of the meaning of Europe as it enlarges to 35 or more countries. The meaning of the project needs to be rearticulated both internally – to Europe’s citizens – and externally to other regions of the world. Without explicit attention, the answer risks being dictated only by a context of war. What would it take for Europe to articulate itself as a transformative global actor as it enlarges? What historical, philosophical and cultural resources must it mobilize, both from ‘core’ European countries and its peripheries? What historical precedents and forms of power are pertinent to thinking the future European shape and form?
