12.00 – 12.45 -. Jasper Schipperijn – Measuring physical activity behavior in its context
Jasper Schipperijn is a Professor in Active Living Environments with the Research Unit for Active Living at the University of Southern Denmark. His research focuses on studying the relation between the built environment and human behavior, and in particular evaluating the effect of changes to the environment on behavior. Much of his work builds on intervention studies or natural experiments that involved changes to the built environment. One of his special interest lies in developing methods to objectively describe behavior and the environment that behavior takes place in.
Sinopsis: Knowing what physical activity a population is doing in a particular context can help in making decisions about what intervention to implement. However, assessing physical activity in each context is complicated. New trends in accelerometry and GPS data processing are beginning to make this measurement possible and easier. This presentation aims to provide the researcher with information on how to assess physical activity in context, from GPS and accelerometer data collection to data processing in spatial databases such as PostgreSQL.
12.45 – 13.30 – Thea Toft Amholt – Motivating playgrounds
Thea Toft Amholt: She is a PhD student who currently works for the Active Living research unit at the University of Southern Denmark. She does research in Public Health and Child Psychology, and she is interested in how child behavior, emotions, interactions, and physical activity are related to the context in which children live. Her current research project investigates the role of playgrounds as a facilitator for physical activity and social interactions among 9-12-year-old children. Her research uses a mixed methods approach.
Sinopsis: Children report that play is a motivating way to be physically active and research has shown that playground play during recess can contribute with up to 40% of children’s daily PA. On this basis, the PhD project ‘Motivating Playgrounds’ aimed to investigate how tweens use school playgrounds and what motivates them. We studied tweens’ PA behavior and play on school playgrounds using GPS, accelerometer, and structured observations. We concluded that motivating school playgrounds for tweens should include social areas to hang out, age-appropriate challenges, and physically active play opportunities.
