    Resumen: In order to assess the effectiveness of visualizations for data analysis we need a sound understanding of how human’s perceptual and cognitive capabilities are influenced by a particular representation design. In this talk I will present results from three recent perceptual experiments for information visualization design. These experiments assessed the representation of directed edges in graphs (PacificVis 2011), different methods for designing dual-scale data charts (InfoVis 2011), and perceptual implications of reading data on large wall displays (work in progress). I will present the results of each study and talk in general about the design of perceptual user studies, alternative approaches, and tradeoffs in experimental design.

    Biografia: Petra Isenberg is a research scientist at INRIA, Saclay, France in the Aviz research group. Prior to joining INRIA, Petra received her PhD from the University of Calgary in 2009 and her Diplom-degree in Computational Visualistics from the University of Magdeburg in 2004.
    Her main research area is information visualization and visual analytics with a focus on collaborative work scenarios. She is interested in exploring how people can most effectively work together when analyzing large and complex data sets on novel display technology such as touch-screens or tabletops.
