Conferencia impartida por el Prof. George Christakos (San Diego State University, USA)
ABSTRACT: The thesis put forward in this seminar is that modern statisticians can not possibly be restricted to the examination of techniques of their own specific field. They can not proceed without considering critically a much more difficult problem, the problem of analyzing the nature of knowledge synthesis in conditions of real world uncertainty. The issue is not only to select a space-time statistics technique to represent the pattern and correlation structure of a dataset, but also to retain substantive interpretations of the data and to continuously change the technique’s structure and form to match the changing needs of the study as the phenomenon spreads across space-time. Mainstream statistics focusing on context-independent data processing is compared conceptually and empirically with interdisciplinary space-time statistics based on context-dependent arguments and logical reasoning, expressed in rigorous formal terms, containing rich semantics, and producing new knowledge.
