    • Abstract: Multiwavelength aerosol Raman lidar is used for vertically resolved characterization of aerosol pollution (geometrical, optical, microphysical properties). This instrument technique has been applied in the past 15 years to various types of aerosol pollution, like biomass-burning smoke, urban haze, and mineral dust. Mineral dust observations however still pose a challenge to aerosol lidar. Mineral dust particles are non-spherical, which makes it difficult to derive microphysical particle properties like particle size. Mineral dust often occurs in mixtures with urban haze, which makes it difficult to identify the optical and microphysical properties of pure mineral dust. In view of the fact that mineral dust is the largest natural source of atmospheric aerosol pullution of continental origin, more effort needs to go into further improving lidar instrument technology for mineral dust characterization. In this presentation, measurement examples on Saharan dust and Asian dust show the possibilities for overcoming the aforementioned challenges with specific lidar measurement and data analysis techniques.
