Nuclear ground state properties provide key information on the nuclear structure of exotic radionuclides. The region of superheavy elements that owe their existence to nuclear shell effects is of particular interest. For a deeper understanding of their structure accurate data on properties such as masses, spins, and moments are important. These allow benchmarking nuclear models helping to refine their predictions for the location and extension of the island of stability of the superheavy elements. With the Penning trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP at GSI recently the first direct mass measurements of nobelium and lawrencium isotopes around N=152 have been performed. These provide information of the strength of shell effects in this region and provide reliable anchor points for superheavy elements. In the future also laser resonance ionization spectroscopy of such elements will become possible. Such experiments will provide access to their atomic structure as well as to nuclear properties via the hyperfine spectroscopy and isotope shift measurements. In my presentation I will summarize the latest experiments and discuss the perspectives for measurements of superheavy elements.
